Etsy Seller Requirements in 2026: Everything You Need to Open and Stay Open

Requirements to open a shop

The barrier to entry is deliberately low. To open an Etsy shop you need:

  • To be of legal age in your country — generally 18+. Minors are not permitted to have their own account; a parent or guardian must own and manage the shop.
  • A valid email address and Etsy account.
  • A supported country of residence for Etsy Payments. Etsy Payments is mandatory where available, so if your country is not supported you cannot get paid through the platform.
  • A bank account in your name and country that matches your shop's registered details, for deposits.
  • Identity verification. Etsy will ask for government-issued ID or equivalent verification depending on your region.
  • A payment method on file for your seller fees.
  • A shop name that is available and meets Etsy's naming rules — 4 to 20 characters, letters and numbers only, no spaces or punctuation.

You do not need a registered business, a company, a website, inventory, or a tax number in most jurisdictions to start. Whether you need one for tax purposes is a separate question and depends entirely on where you live.

What you are actually allowed to sell

This is where more applications fail than on paperwork. Every item must fall into one of three categories:

  • Handmade — made or designed by you. Crucially, this includes digital items you designed yourself: SVGs, printables, templates, patterns. If you drew it, it qualifies.
  • Vintage — at least 20 years old. Not "vintage-style". Genuinely old.
  • Craft supplies — materials and tools intended for making things.

Two rules catch digital sellers specifically:

  • Reselling is prohibited. You cannot buy a commercial-use bundle, repackage it and sell it as your own. This is the most common cause of digital shop suspensions, and Etsy does act on it.
  • You must have the rights to everything you use — fonts, graphics, AI-generated elements included. A commercial licence for a font is not optional if the font appears in a product you sell.

Add the prohibited-items policy on top: no counterfeits, no trademark infringement (character art, band names, slogans owned by someone else), no regulated goods. Trademark strikes are the second most common suspension cause among print-on-demand sellers.

Etsy Payments is mandatory where available — you cannot opt for PayPal-only. Payouts follow a schedule you set, into the verified bank account matching your shop details.

Tax reporting depends on your country. US sellers receive a 1099-K when they cross the reporting threshold, which has moved repeatedly in recent years — check the current figure rather than relying on a number you remember. Etsy calculates and remits sales tax and VAT on many transactions automatically, particularly on digital goods, but this varies by jurisdiction and does not remove your own obligation to report income.

You are self-employed the moment you make a sale, regardless of whether you registered anything. That means tracking income and expenses from day one. See Etsy seller taxes 2026 for the detail, and confirm anything jurisdiction-specific with a local accountant — tax rules differ enough that general guidance is genuinely dangerous here.

Listing requirements

Every listing needs, at minimum:

  • At least one photo. One is the minimum; ten is the number that converts. See Etsy listing image size for the specs.
  • A title up to 140 characters.
  • A category and applicable attributes.
  • A price and quantity.
  • "Who made it", "what is it" and "when was it made" — the three questions that establish handmade/vintage eligibility.
  • Shipping details for physical goods, or uploaded files for digital ones.

Tags are technically optional — which is why so many sellers leave them empty and wonder why nothing ranks. All 13 are effectively mandatory if you want to be found. Same for the description: Etsy does not require a good one, but shoppers and conversion do.

Star Seller requirements

Star Seller is a separate performance bar, reviewed on a rolling basis. To earn the badge you generally must hit, across the review window:

  • Message response rate — respond to the first message in a thread within 24 hours, at a high threshold (historically 95%).
  • Rating — maintain an average around 4.8 or above.
  • On-time dispatch with tracking — ship by your stated date and mark it shipped, at a high threshold.
  • A minimum number of orders and revenue in the review period, so the metrics are meaningful.

Two things sellers get wrong. First, the response-rate metric counts first replies in a conversation, so one missed message can cost you the badge for a month — and there is no partial credit. Second, digital sellers are not exempt from the dispatch metric in the way they assume; instant downloads are handled automatically, but any manual or made-to-order digital work still counts.

The badge is not required to sell and is not a ranking factor in itself. It affects buyer trust. Full detail in Etsy Star Seller 2026.

The requirements that quietly close shops

Nothing above is difficult. Shops rarely fail the entry requirements — they fail the ongoing ones, and almost always for one of three reasons: selling something they did not have the rights to, letting response times or ratings slide, or simply never building enough listings to get found in the first place.

The first two are discipline. The third is a production problem, and it is the one that ends most shops without any policy violation at all: a compliant, well-run shop with fifteen listings is invisible, and invisible shops get abandoned.

Frequently asked questions

What do you need to sell on Etsy?

Legal age (generally 18+), an Etsy account, residence in a country supported by Etsy Payments, a bank account in your name matching your shop details, identity verification, a payment method for fees, and an available shop name of 4–20 letters and numbers.

Do I need a business licence to sell on Etsy?

Not to open a shop in most jurisdictions. Whether you need one for tax or trading purposes depends entirely on where you live and how much you earn. You are self-employed from your first sale regardless, so track income and expenses from day one and check local rules with an accountant.

What are the Etsy Star Seller requirements?

Across the review window: respond to first messages within 24 hours at around a 95% rate, keep an average rating near 4.8 or above, dispatch on time with tracking at a high threshold, and meet a minimum order and revenue count. The badge affects buyer trust, not search ranking.

What can you not sell on Etsy?

Anything outside handmade, vintage (20+ years old) or craft supplies. Reselling commercial bundles as your own work, counterfeit or trademark-infringing items, and regulated goods are all prohibited. Using fonts or graphics without a commercial licence also breaches the rules.

Can I sell AI-generated designs on Etsy?

You must have the rights to everything in what you sell and must disclose how items were made under Etsy's handmade policy. Rules and enforcement in this area continue to evolve, so check Etsy's current seller policy before listing AI-assisted work rather than relying on older guidance.
