Etsy vs Shopify in 2026: The Real Cost and Shipping Comparison

Etsy vs Shopify on the two things that actually decide it — total cost at your sales volume, and how shipping works on each. With break-even maths for physical and digital sellers.

Etsy vs Shopify in 2026: The Real Cost and Shipping Comparison

The two cost models are structurally different

Etsy charges you per sale. Shopify charges you per month. That single difference drives everything else.

On Etsy you pay a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing (around 3% + $0.25 in the US). Nothing up front. Sell nothing, pay almost nothing.

On Shopify you pay a monthly subscription regardless of sales, plus payment processing on each transaction (roughly 2.9% + $0.30 on the entry plan using Shopify Payments). There is no per-sale platform commission if you use Shopify Payments — that is the structural advantage — but the subscription is due whether you sell one item or one thousand.

So Etsy is cheaper when volume is low, and Shopify becomes cheaper as volume rises. The only question is where the lines cross. Rates and plan prices change on both platforms — verify current figures before committing.

Where the break-even actually falls

Take a $25 product and compare marginal cost per sale.

On Etsy: 6.5% transaction ($1.63) + processing (≈$1.00) ≈ $2.63 per sale, plus negligible amortised listing fees.

On Shopify: processing only (≈2.9% + $0.30 = $1.03) ≈ $1.03 per sale, plus the fixed monthly subscription.

Etsy costs about $1.60 more per sale. So Shopify's subscription is covered once you clear roughly $1.60 × number of sales ≥ monthly plan cost — which on an entry plan lands somewhere in the region of 20–30 sales per month at this price point.

That sounds like a low bar, and on the arithmetic it is. But it is also the most misleading number in this entire comparison, because it assumes the sales happen either way. They do not.

The cost nobody puts in the table: traffic

Etsy's fee is not really a payment-processing fee. It is a customer acquisition fee. Etsy has tens of millions of active buyers already searching for what you sell. A well-optimised listing gets found by people who were going to buy something like it today, and you paid nothing to reach them.

Shopify sends you zero traffic. None. A Shopify store on launch day is a beautiful shop on an empty street. Every visitor must come from SEO you built, ads you paid for, social you grew, or an email list you own.

Reframe the break-even with that in mind: if going to Shopify means paying for ads to replace Etsy's organic traffic, and your customer acquisition cost is $8, then Shopify's "cheaper" $1.03 per sale is really $9.03 per sale. Etsy's $2.63 with free traffic wins comfortably — until you have an audience of your own.

That is the honest answer to "which is cheaper": Shopify is cheaper per transaction and more expensive per customer, until you have built the thing that makes customers arrive for free.

Shipping: how the two platforms differ

For physical sellers this is often the deciding practicality.

Etsy gives you discounted shipping labels you buy and print inside the platform, shipping profiles you build once and reuse across listings, and calculated shipping based on the buyer's address and parcel dimensions. It also applies significant search pressure toward free domestic shipping in some markets — Etsy has historically favoured listings offering free shipping over a threshold, which in practice means building shipping cost into the item price. Tracking flows back into the order automatically, and delivery performance feeds your Star Seller badge.

Shopify gives you more control and less hand-holding. You define your own zones, rates and conditions with far more granularity — weight-based tiers, per-region rules, carrier-calculated rates on higher plans. Shopify Shipping offers discounted labels in supported countries, and the app ecosystem covers anything native shipping does not. But you configure all of it yourself, and a misconfigured rate table silently loses you money on every order until you notice.

The trade is consistent with everything else: Etsy is opinionated and fast to set up, Shopify is flexible and demands you know what you want. For a deeper treatment of the profit side, see Etsy shipping strategy.

If you sell digital downloads

The shipping comparison evaporates and the calculus changes.

Etsy handles digital delivery natively — upload the files, the buyer receives them instantly on payment, and Etsy hosts and serves them. It works, it costs nothing extra, and buyers trust it. Shopify needs an app for digital delivery, which usually means another monthly fee on top of the subscription, and it gives you delivery controls Etsy does not (download limits, expiry windows, licence keys).

The stronger argument for digital sellers is not delivery mechanics but margin. With no cost of goods, Etsy's ~11–15% is coming straight out of profit. At meaningful volume that is a large number, and Shopify's flat subscription starts to look very attractive.

The counter-argument is equally strong: digital products are almost always discovery purchases. Nobody wakes up planning to buy your specific SVG pack — they search "boho printable wall art" and buy whatever ranks. That search happens on Etsy. See Etsy fees for digital downloads for the full margin breakdown.

The answer for most sellers: both, in order

Framing this as a permanent either/or is the actual mistake. The sequence that works:

  1. Start on Etsy. Zero fixed cost, built-in buyers, fast validation of whether anyone wants your product. Pay the commission — you are buying customer acquisition at a rate no ad platform will match.
  2. Build depth and learn what sells. Etsy's search data tells you which products and keywords have real demand.
  3. Add Shopify once you have an audience. When you have an email list, a social following or brand searches, launch a store where you keep more margin and own the customer relationship.
  4. Run both. Etsy for discovery of new customers, your own store for repeat purchases and higher-margin sales to people who already know you.

The one thing that makes this sequence work is catalogue depth on Etsy — enough well-optimised listings to be found often enough to build the audience that makes step 3 viable.

Frequently asked questions

Is Etsy or Shopify cheaper?

Etsy is cheaper at low volume because you pay nothing until you sell. Shopify is cheaper per transaction once you clear roughly 20–30 sales a month on a $25 product, since it has no per-sale commission with Shopify Payments. But Shopify sends no traffic, so the saving only holds if you can generate sales without paying for them.

How does shipping compare on Etsy vs Shopify?

Etsy gives you discounted labels, reusable shipping profiles and calculated rates inside the platform, with strong pressure toward free shipping. Shopify gives you far more granular control over zones and rate rules, plus discounted labels in supported countries, but you configure all of it yourself.

Can I sell digital downloads on Shopify?

Yes, but you need an app for digital delivery, which usually adds a monthly cost. Etsy handles digital delivery natively at no extra charge. Shopify's apps do offer more control, such as download limits and expiry windows.

Should I move from Etsy to Shopify?

Rarely as a replacement, and almost never before you have an audience. Etsy's fees buy you customer acquisition that Shopify does not provide. Add Shopify once you have an email list, social following or brand searches — then run both, with Etsy for discovery and your store for repeat sales.

Is there an Etsy vs Shopify calculator?

You can approximate it easily: work out Etsy's per-sale cost (6.5% + processing) minus Shopify's (processing only), then divide the Shopify monthly plan cost by that difference. That gives the monthly sales volume where Shopify becomes cheaper — before accounting for traffic.
